Fishing & Boating News

Propeller Talk - That time has come again and I again have the duty of producing the propeller talk for our magazine. Again your committee has been busy with the general running of the club and with a few new ideas (some nearly coming off) such as the Garry Brown Harbour expo which was postponed till another day due to bad weather. Tom has been busy with the indoor program and the quality of talks continues to impress. Good to see few boats turn up for our safety field day at the improved wharf rd ramp, again we always seem to learn something new all the time. With new lifejacket regulations coming into force in November, it was interesting to get the heads up from the maritime officer, gives us all time to get used to the wearing or purchasing of lifejackets. . ...... read the whole Propeller talk

Windermere Dam - 29 September to 1 October 2007

Paul Tanit and his huge Murray Cod

Mal and I arrived at Windamere at about 9am to be greeted by Paul and Sally Tanti. We were a bit surprised to see them off the water as they arrived the previous day.  Before we could even get into conversation Paul raced over to get his camera to show us a photo of what was supposed to be a yellowbelly, but actually turned out to be a huge murray cod. It was a bit hard to comprehend what we were actually looking at. I'm sure not many of us have seen anything of this proportion before, and then it hit me; he's done it again, what with his 3.2kg bass out of a trout impoundment, his 6kg jewie while spinning for bream and now the luckiest man in fishing lands a 125cm murray cod.
A few hours later Mal and I were trolling alongLaurie with his big Murray Cod when I got a hit. At first I thought the fish had taken me around a snag but as I couldn't feel the line rubbing against anything I couldn't understand what was happening as it didn't have the usual fight of a yellowbelly, it was more of a tug of war. Anyway, after a while all was revealed and to my amazement I too was connected to a metre plus cod. After some skilful boat handling by Mal and several laps around the boat by me we landed a l02cm murray cod. It weighed approx. 20kg. Unfortunately both fish were caught before the outing start time! Oops.
By the time the official start time came around the wind had picked up and remained with us for most of the weekend, apart from a bit of relief in the evening and early morning. In all a total of 9 members and 2 visitors fished for a total of 28 yellowbelly and 5 murray cod including the two caught before the kick off.

The results were:  Ann Gerard - 2 YB largest 555mm; Sally Tanti - 1 YB 450mm & 1 cod 600mm; Dean Gerard - 3 YB largest 532mm; David Gerard - 4 YB & 1 cod 671mm;  Todd Wilkinson - 4 YB largest 570mm; Todd's mate - James 1 YB; Steve Berestov - 4 YB largest 570mm; Steve's mate Peter - 1 YB & 1 cod 530mm; Mal Clark - 3 YB largest 600mm and Lawrie Zammit - 5 YB largest 590mm.  Paul Tanti was heard to say that after catching his cod he didn't care if he didn't get a fish all weekend and unfortunately that is what he ended up with - nothing………..……….Lawrie Zammit CB 70
